What's Up LA

What’s Up in May

There’s so much to look forward to in May, the SoCal beginning of summer. With Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day and near-perfect weather on all the days in between, there’s no shortage of things to do and see in our great city. Here are a few of the things on my May to-do list:

Cinco de Mayo on Olvera Street

Head to DTLA the first weekend in May for a truly authentic Cinco de Mayo celebration. Olvera Street’s annual festivities span two days and features mariachi, pinatas, carnival games and authentic Mexican food all in the Mexico-style town square in the oldest part of downtown.

Masters of Taste

Back for another year at the Rose Bowl May 6th, Masters of Taste is the luxury food festival. The event will showcase some of LA’s most renowned restaurants, including Redbird, Bourbon Steak, Bone Kettle, Ramen Tatsunoya and the Raymond, among others. More info and tickets here.

In The Fields of Empty Days at LACMA

The new LACMA exhibit opens May 6th and runs through September 9, looking at how the past and present intersect in Iranian photos, paintings and sculptures featuring kings and imams. More info here.

Kidspace Children’s Museum

While open year-round, May is a great time to take the little ones to Kidspace because most days are warm enough to take full advantage of the outdoor play and water features (don’t forget a towel!) and it’s not too busy with the summer break crowd. A Pasadena gem, Kidspace is a go-to of family fun. Hours and more info here.

Rooftop Cinema Club

The fourth season of alfresco film viewing at the Montalban is in full swing and you can probably start ditching layers as the evenings are warming up. Upcoming screenings include Scarface, Call Me By Your Name, and Clueless. More info and tickets here.
