The artist’s miniature “sportraits” re-create classic moments in both women’s and men’s soccer using materials like gum wrappers, glue and paint.

Sueño Perro: A Film Installation by Alejandro G. Iñárritu

When Mexican director Alejandro G. Iñárritu made his debut feature, Amores Perros, over a million feet of film didn’t make it to the final cut (to put that into perspective, the finished two-and-a-half-hour movie used around 18,000 feet of film). Twenty five years later, some of these unearthed reels of celluloid now zip through a ground-floor gallery at LACMA as part of a multi-channel film installation.

Dodgers vs. Astros + Fireworks at Dodger Stadium

Buy tickets to see the team take on the Houston Astros on the Fourth and then stick around for a fireworks show you can see from your seat; line up on the field level near the end of the game and you can even watch from the outfield grass. The game starts at 6:10pm, so expect the fireworks show to start around 9pm, depending on how long the game goes.

LA Wine Fest

This women-run wine festival—celebrating its 20th anniversary this year—is back at Long Beach’s Harry Bridges Memorial Park with hundreds of wines, brews and spirits from all over the world. Food trucks, live music, games and artisan pop-up boutiques will also be on-site. Each GA ticket includes entry to the fest, unlimited drink tastings and a souvenir wine glass. Ride-sharing or public transport are highly recommended.

Jazz at LACMA

One of L.A.’s best free live-music offerings, Jazz at LACMA has featured legit legends over its three-decade run at the museum. Seating for the program is available in the museum’s plaza on a first-come, first-served basis, though you’re welcome to picnic on the grass, too (you won’t really be able to see the show, but you’ll still hear it). You’ll find the series on Friday evenings in LACMA’s welcome plaza (just behind Urban Light) throughout the summer.

LA Pride

One of the biggest pride events in the country, LA Pride attracts thousands to a what had typically been a two-day fest and parade in West Hollywood but is now located a bit to the east. The parade portion will step off in Hollywood, where it’ll be accompanied by LA Pride Village, which will take over Hollywood Boulevard from Argyle to Bronson. The free street festival is taking the place of music fest L.A.

LGBTQ+ Pride Night at Dodger Stadium

Dodger blue joins the colors of the rainbow at the stadium’s annual Pride Night, a partnership with LA Pride. Expect a pregame party in the right field pavilion, an exclusive jersey (included with ticket purchase), a celebrity opening pitch and, following the game against the San Francisco Giants, fireworks. Cue the kiss cam.

Friday Night Wine Tastings

Now one of L.A.’s most treasured summer traditions, Barnsdall Park’s wine tastings regularly attract sell-out crowds. Perched atop Olive Hill on the west lawn of the historic Hollyhock House (which you can tour during the evening for an additional $36), the Barnsdall Friday fund raisers include fine selections of boutique wines provided by Silverlake Wine with a spectacular sunset and 360-degree views of the city.
